It’s easy to buy every baby gadget you hear about, but it’s important to do your due diligence. Baby monitors are one of the trendiest baby products that most young mothers hear about, and want to buy without finding out whether they really need it.

The truth is that not everyone needs a baby monitor. Our mothers did not use baby monitors, and they and us did not die. Most Nigerian parents are not using baby monitors and nothing bad has happened to their babies.

So, the truth is that baby monitors are not really necessary – although they are nice to have. Just like any other piece of technology, baby monitors exist to make the user’s life easier and or safer.

So, What Is a Baby Monitor and How Do they Work?

It’s not easy coping with a baby or toddler when you don’t have a domestic helper, relative or nanny to help you keep an eye on the child while you’re busy in the kitchen or elsewhere around the house. But, if you install a baby monitor in your baby’s room, you can hear when your baby starts crying. And, if you have a video baby monitor, all you need to do is look up every few minutes to see your baby (on the monitor screen) – without leaving where you are.

How cool is that? Think of a baby monitor as having a CCTV in your house, so that even when you are in the kitchen or any part of the house, you would see or hear when your baby needs you – or know when an emergency occurs.

How to Know When a Baby Monitor is Not Right for You?

While there are lots of benefits from using baby monitors, as a parent, there are reasons why a baby monitor may not work for you. You don’t need a baby monitor if:

-If you always have many relatives, house-helps or nannies around the house.

-If you have a sick baby, sick relative or aged family member that you want to keep an eye on without physically going to their rooms – so that you can do your household chores and still monitor them.

Conclusion: A Baby Monitor is Not Really Necessary

So you see, not every parent needs a baby monitor – even if they can afford it or not.

While we can all agree that a baby monitor helps a great deal, buying one only if you need it, and if you have a big house or don’t have in-house nannies. Buying a baby monitor is not a do-or-die affair. You and your child can still survive okay without it. But, it’s not a luxury, either.
