Weaning Tips: When And How To Stop Breast-Feeding Your Baby (A Guide For Nursing Mothers)

After delivery, you were lectured on how important breastmilk is to promote healthy growth and development of infants, it wasn't easy though but as time goes on, breast-feeding got easier. World Health Organization recommends that infants should be exclusively breastfed for six months, after which you can introduce your baby to solid foods and continue breastfeeding.

If you are breast-feeding, this article is for you. You might be faced with question i.e When is the best time to stop breastfeeding?  How do I go about it? How will my child react? How do I avoid engorgement? How long will it take to stop breast feeding?  Read on

When is the right time to stop breastfeeding: 

  • There is no right or wrong time to stop breastfeeding, 
  • Choose a time when your baby is not sick but very healthy to be able to withstand the trauma. 
  • If you or your baby is sick, you may need to reconsider waiting, weaning at this time is bad timing. Hold on until you or your baby is well again.

Breastfeeding when to stop age:

  • There is no set age for weaning a child. Ideally, babies should be weaned at or before their first birthday.

Weaning a baby should be strategically planned: 

  • Ascertain when the timing is right before stopping breast feeding, especially when you breastfeed your baby exclusively to avoid upsetting your baby.
  • Schedule a time when you free and have enough time to monitor how your child will react. The choice to stop breastfeeding your baby is yours; you decide when the time is right to wean your child. 

Gradually cut down on how frequent you breast feed your baby daily:

  • At this stage, you should  have introduced your baby to varieties of solid foods. 
  • Ensure that you feed your baby with solid until he/she is full before you offer breastmilk. 
  • At some meal time offer your baby water to drink before food or after food instead of breast milk.  In no time you will realize your baby has lost interest in breastmilk.

Your baby may not be willing to stop taking breastmilk:

  • As long as you are ready, you need to stay focused on your baby’s needs to distract him/her when the urge for take breast milk sets in. 
  • It is advice not to stop breastfeeding shortly,  its best to withdraw bit by bit  this way your child can withstand it and avoid you experiencing painful and  engorged breast .

How long should you breastfeed: 

  • You can breastfeed a child as long as you want.
  • Weaning a child from breastfeeding takes a about two weeks or more depending on the baby’s reception.

Babies born at full term has enough iron passed on from the mother , Breastmilk contains small amounts of iron and research has it that the risk of iron deficiency is very low in full-term  babies breastfeed more than six months before solid food s are introduced.
