Leaving to the hospital for delivery won't be as exciting as you think when tension from labour sets in, especially for first time mothers but it's still a good idea to be prepared. If you're in the final stage of pregnancy and almost due for delivery but don’t know what to take to the hospital for delivery. Most hospitals don't tell you everything you need for delivery, they may tell you to take anything you can lay your hands on but its best if you took time out to gather every bit of items needed for the delivery of a newborn baby as listed below.

When To Pack My Hospital Bag When Pregnant

Most pregnant women often ask “when should i pack my hospital bag for labor and delivery“? In my opinion it is never to early to have a bag packed ready with items needed for birth center when your are 7 months gone. You never know when you will get into labour, it might come earlier than expected and if your bag is not readily packed you may forget one or two essential items and leave the bag in a place where it can be easily be reached. 

You may want to pack two small bags to the hospital for delivery.
#1. Items needed during labour and 
#2. Items needed after delivery.

What to Pack in My Hospital Bag for Mom and Baby

Now you are ready to pack your essential hospital bag but you are left in doubt thinking “what should i pack in my hospital bag for labour”? 

Below is a List of What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for Labor/Delivery.

Moms Personal Items before and after delivery:
  • Massage lotion
  • 3 packs of super-absorbent sanitary pads – for heavy flow and Several pairs of maternity underpants (preferably disposable) and 2 or 3 comfortable nursing bras also breast pads to absorb leaks.
  • Food to eat during labour and after delivery
  • A couple bottles of water 
  • Cell phone, cell phone charger, phone airtime to announce the good news
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Lip balm and deodorant
  • Entertainment to distract labour pain: an IPod for music, magazines,  handheld electronic games
  • Camera or video camera, memory card, batteries and charger - some hospitals have free access to the internet to be able to upload pictures.
  • Essential toiletries  and sanitary pads like doctor brown sanitary heavy flow sanitary pad popularly known in Nigeria and makeup (if necessary) and towel
  • Night wears-Loose-fitting night gowns for breastfeeding (hospital robes are uncomfortable and they are not so good looking in case you have to attend to visitors at the hospital's waiting room) and flat slippers
  • A couple blouses and some wrappers (add some extra)
  • Put in comfortable clothes for after birth and a ride home.
  • A rubber band or a clip to tie your hair, If you have a long hair.
Baby Items
  • Baby diapers and nappies and wipes (most have)
  • A few baby clothes, vests, socks, body suit or onesie for babies first picture and mittens.
  • A shawl or blanket to wrap the baby against cold and a few flannels
  • Baby nail clipper, a comb or brush
  • Baby soap, a few wash clothes, lotions or olive oil  for pre-term babies
  • Hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol (spirit) and sudo cream for baby rash
  • 2 baby towels (one small one big)
  • New razor blade – to cut the umbilical cord 
  • Baby bottles, Milton or baby bottle sterilizer.
